cenote

1. (Geological Science) (esp in the Yucatán peninsula) a natural well formed by the collapse of an overlying limestone crust: often used.

The world’s two largest are found in the  Riviera Maya, measuring more than 435 miles, according to the Quintana Roo Speleological Society (QRSS). Also called “cenotes”, these underground rivers were formed by thousands of years of dripping rain water on the subsoil’s calcareous rock, forming vast freshwater rivers and epic stalagmites and stalactites.

The cenotes were sacred spaces for the Mayans and an essential source of freshwater. Over the years, archeologists have found Mayan remnants in the cenotes, including jewelry and.

The Turtle Protection Project at Xpu Ha La Playa is releasing hundreds of baby turtles every week as part of their non-profit conservation project.  “Programa de protección de tortugas” (the turtle protection project) at Xpu Ha La Playa is a project which is currently performing humbling work, enabling our continued enjoyment of the local ecosystem.

From May to September, a volunteer single-handedly patrols the beach every night, locating the recently laid nests and transporting them a few meters back on the same beach. Then he carefully buries the eggs in a protected, monitored area. He notes the date, type of turtle, and the number of eggs. About seven weeks later, the eggs hatch and the baby turtles free themselves from their shell and begin their dangerous trek to the sea.

The Ancient Mayans are renowned among historians and archaeologists as being an incredibly advanced culture that excelled at mathematics, astronomy, and arts.

The Mayans are one of the oldest documented societies. They populated areas of Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador in Central America and Mexico. You can still visit the ruins of the ancient people in these places today, like Tulum in the Riviera Maya, and the Chichen Itza temple in the Yucatan Peninsula. Although the Mayan civilization eventually blended with other nationalities, there are still many descendants of the ancient Mayans who speak Mayan languages, and preserve their own traditions and arts, such as creating beautiful textiles.

The Ancient Mayans were so advanced in some sciences that modern day people often feel as if they have mystical powers and take their predictions very seriously. They are possibly the first culture to develop the telescope and map the stars and other phenomena in the night sky using advanced mathematics. Using this information they developed an accurate calendar.  Many of the events of their daily life were organized according to this calendar.
